Concentration and mental toughness are the margins of victory

Concentration and focus are the first ingredients of any success formula. To achieve anything in life, to get anywhere in life, first and foremost we need concentration and focus. Sunlight, when focussed with a magnifying glass, acquires burning temperature. Similarly, life energies, when focused on life objectives through the techniques taught in this free course, are able to achieve extraordinary results.

Unfortunately, human concentration or attention span is rapidly coming down due to the stress and pace of modern life. Probably one of the biggest challenge faced by students today are their inability to concentrate on task at hand. In the class room, though physically present, their minds wander outside the college. Many students, as soon as they try to sit down on study table, their minds go blank or they are helplessly drawn to TV for a show or to freezer for a drink or to bed for a nap. Many students are securing poor grades due to this problem inspite of putting in their best efforts.
There are many cases being reported of ADD or Attention Deficiency Syndrom in youngsters. In one program of ours, one State ranker admitted, “Now my concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages. I get fidgety, lose the thread, begin looking for something else to do. I feel as if I’m always dragging my wayward brain back to the text. The deep reading that used to come naturally has become a struggle.”  Often we can find that a student is able to surf the web or play video game for two hours but unable to attend to homework for more than five minutes.

If you chase two rabbits, both will escape

Due to the constant flow of information and the huge impact technology and TV have on our lives, not to mention the demands of job and family, the human attention span is diminishing. Conscious or subconscious “showers” of data, images and voices assault our brain and prevent us from finding the necessary concentration to really digest and process what is constantly inflicted on our overloaded brain cells.

Researchers in Britain, lead by sociologist David Moxon, carried out a study last year and found an average person’s attention span is just five minutes and seven seconds compared to the 12 minutes ten years ago – and young people are the worst affected.  And what’s more shocking is that the lack of ability to focus is resulting in poor study grades and a surge of mishaps on the road and at home.

Sociologist David Moxon says, “ More than ever, research is highlighting a trend in reduced attention and concentration spans, and our experiment suggests that the younger generation appears to be worst affected. In fact, lack of attention has a serious impact on task performance and increases the risk of accidents.

Concentrate, play your game, and don’t be afraid to win

In another survey, carried out in New Delhi last year, it was found that average ability of the respondents to carry out simple tasks and recall daily events had worsened compared to a decade aga 58% blamed stress for their inability to concentrate while 27% said they were too busy trying to make decisions.

It has also been found that persons over 50 have a much better attention span than younger groups, suggesting that impaired attention is due to our hectic lifestyle rather than being age-related.  And, declining attention spans are causing household accidents like pans being left to boil over, baths allowed to overflow, freezer doors left open, gas burners left switched on etc.
